Year 4 visit Pizza Express

Christmas Bake Off

The School Council organised a Christmas Bake Off.

We were all extremely impressed with the creative bakes brought into school.

Well done to everyone who entered!

Year 6 and Year 4 visit to Metheringham Airfield

Year 6 and Year 4 were extremely lucky to visit Metheringham Airfield for a World War 2 Christmas trip.

In the morning, we took part in a dance session, played WW2 games, sang songs and learned about rationing by using ration books to collect ingredients to make carrot cookies.  The afternoon was just as much fun as we made Christmas cards thinking about the messages we would write home if we were on the front line, we made Christmas decorations and also made friendship bracelets as we learnt about Make Do and Mend.

It was a brilliant day and we are extremely thankful to everyone who ran the workshops.

Doddington Hall Scarecrow Competition

Miss Eacott has been getting creative with a group of Year 6 children to create our school Elmer Scarecrow.

Elmer will be displayed with other scarecrows at Doddington Hall during October half term.

World Mental Health Day

This week we have focused on looking after us as well others.

We had a whole school assembly on random acts of kindness where we began our sunflower mission in order to celebrate those who are kind to others.  If you were noticed doing a random act of kindness this week you received a sunflower sticker and had your act displayed on the board for everyone to see.  We are extremely proud of how kind and caring the children and adults are at South Hykeham so it was a great opportunity to celebrate what we see on a daily basis.  Well done to everyone who received a sticker!

On Thursday, we took part in different activities in class for example, mindful colouring, listening to music, thinking about our triggers and what makes us happy.  We then took part in an activity workshop where we did yoga and dancing as well as having a really fun assembly with Mrs Hillier and Mrs Fairweather where we listened to different songs and watched a video clip.

World Poetry Day

KS2 took part in a very special attempt to break a Guiness World Record on Poetry Day.

We joined lots of other schools to be part of Laura Mucha's biggest poetry lesson.

We had to follow several rules (for example, everyone sitting together in the same room, not being able to leave the room during set times and taking videos of us taking part) which have been sent off with to be verified.

Before the lesson, we watched a video created by Laura explaining that the poem was based on 'What Counts.'  We shared lots of ideas and sent these to her.  Laura then read through every schools' ideas and drafted a poem.  We then helped to redraft and create a final poem.  It was great fun taking part in the polls and seeing our ideas being used.

The final poem is on the poetry archive website and will be featured on the radio, magazines and in newspapers.

Across the school, each class had a focus poem for the morning.  We looked at the poems and thought about how they had been written, why they had been written and how they made us feel.  We then wrote in the style of these poems.

European Languages Day

On Thursday 26th September we took part in European Languages Day.

We all gathered in the hall for a special assembly.

Miss Stephens had collected a range of video and audio clips of people counting to 10 in a different languages. We all listened carefully and had to guess which language we could hear.  We then looked at where the country was in Europe.

We were very lucky to hear from a former pupil who is studying languages at university, family members of staff, staff themselves and we found it very special to hear some of us speaking different languages too.

Some of the languages we heard were: French, Spanish, Polish, Italian, Welsh, German and Romanian.

In class, we learnt how to say hello in different languages and some of us got to try French food!

Do you know which language is being spoken?

Rhubarb Theatre

On Wednesday 18th September, Rhubarb Theatre came to our amazing school.  They performed Collection Day.  The performance was about stopping pollution and saving our beautiful world.  They showed us this through three stories: one about a bird who had a net trapped on it, the second was a squirrel who had lost his home when trees were cut down and the third was about the pollution and rubbish in the water and how this affected the fish.

Although these are matters we need to think about seriously they performed it in a SUPER, WOW WAY!  The props were brilliant, the music was outstanding and the acting was sensational.  The whole show was excellent!

After the whole school show, Year 4 took part in a story telling workshop.  In this story we heard about a girl who was looking for her home.  It turned out that her home was much bigger than all of the places because her home is the world and she needs to help protect it.  This story was told in the best way- we had parachute games, dancing games, teamwork games and we even did the limbo.  All of these games helped us remember what happened in the story.

We continued our work in class and discussed lots of ways we can play a part in protecting our world.  What can you do to help save our planet?
